All human beings are children of one father, Hadhrat Adam peace be upon him. On the basis of humanity and morality a Muslim should respect all, think good for them, help them in need and have good behavior with them. Islam asks Muslims to do good with every human being and even with every living being. The prophet is reported to have said,'' Creature is the family of Allah, so the dearest to Allah is one who treats with them in a good manner. (Mishkat:Babush-shafqah)
A Muslim should treat with a non-Muslim in brotherly and good manner, but this relation has some limit also. Muslims are not allowed to have deep friendship or intimacy with non-Muslims because it may be dangerous for them. The Qura'an strictly prohibits it as it says, ''O ye who believe! Take not for friends and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or sport,- whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among those who reject Faith: but fear you Allah, if you have faith (indeed).'' (Capter.5 verse.57)
To have food often with a non-Muslim is also undesirable. Yes, if it is for creating soft corner in his heart about Islam, or to bring him near to Islam, then it is allowed but only sometimes, not time and again just to entertain some one. The Prophet (SWS) says, ''It is bad to have food with non-Muslims.'' It is also proved that the Prophet (SWS) had food with a non-Muslim. (Fatawa Rahimiah v.2 p.282)
In the light of above-mentioned Qura'anic verses and in the light of many Ahaadeeth of the Prophet you may have friendship with your non-Muslim mates but it must not be so deep. You may also call non-Muslims to your house and give them food but Purdah (Veil of whole body) must be observed between males and females. But be careful the so-called concept of boy and girl firneds has no place in Islam.
Allah knows best.
Thanking You
