Dear Brother in Islam

Walaikum assalam

The answers of your questions are as follows:

(1) The Best Way to Thank Allah

In deed the bounties of Allah Almighty abound, as we can never count them. The Glorious Qur¡¯aan truly states: ¡°and if you would count the bounty of Allah you cannot reckon it.¡± (Surah Ibrahim 14, Verse 34) There are many ways mentioned in the Holy Qur¡¯aan and Hadith to thank Allah for His countless bounties showering upon us. Saying ¡®Al-Hamdu Lillah¡¯ and other words of praise, offering prayers, offering Sajdah, giving charity and so on. The best way to thank Allah is to obey His all commandments and spend the boons and bounties that He favouered us with in accordance to His will and order.

(2) Why we tend to Commit Sins? How to overcome it?

Allah almighty has created us and showed us the right way by giving us reason, sending prophets, messengers and books of guidance. Now it is upon us, if we follow the right path we will certainly attain His pleasure and success, but, Allah forbid, if we get on the wrong track we will be doomed to perish. The Glorious Qur¡¯aan very explicitly rather emphatically explains it in Surah Ash-Shams:

¡°By the sun and his brightness,
And the moon when she follows him,
And the day when it reveals him,
And the night when it enshrouds him,
And the heaven and Him who built it
And the earth and Him who spread it,
And a soul and Him who perfected it,
And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it,
He is indeed successful who causes it to grow,
And he is indeed a failure who stunts it.¡±

There are many factors which cause a man to divert from good path. Actually, human being is a creature between angels and animals. The angels are only for spiritual duties, they have no carnal desire and are not able to disobey Allah while the animals have no spiritual instinct, they have only carnal desires. Human beings, between the two, have been given carnal desires as well as spiritual duties. So, one who tends to the angels¡¯ qualities is considered good while one who tends to animal habits is disliked. It is interesting to note that raising oneself high and adopting the qualities of angels is difficult since climbing to a height is always difficult, while tending to sins and animal habits is like descending to a depth which is always easy. And, moreover there are some other factors which cause a man to tend to sins. This instinct of human beings is named as ¡®Nafs¡¯ (self, soul), as the Gloriuos Qur¡¯aan and Hadith repeatedly mentioned the ¡®Nafs¡¯ and its devious tricks.

According to the Glorious Qur¡¯aan and Hadith there are three types of ¡®Nafs¡¯; ¡®Nafs Mutmainnah¡¯, ¡®Nafs Ammarah¡¯ and ¡®Nafs Lawwamah¡¯. Though the ¡®Nafs¡¯ is only one but according to its conditions it changes. ¡®Nafs Mutmainnah means a ¡®Nafs¡¯ which tends to the ¡®higher status¡¯ i.e. to angels¡¯ attributes and feels satisfied in following divine commandments. ¡®Mutmainnah¡¯ means satisfied. This ¡®Nafs¡¯ finds a mention in Surah Al-Fajr:

¡°But ah! Thou soul at peace!
Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!
Enter thou among My bondmen!
Enter thou My Garden!¡±
(89/27-30)

¡®Nafs Ammarah¡¯ is one which tends to the ¡®lower status¡¯ i.e. animal attitude, is immersed in worldly entertainments and escapes following Sharia. ¡®Ammarah¡¯ means one who enjoins and governs, since its person is govern by this ¡®Nafs¡¯. This kind of ¡®Nafs¡¯ has been mentioned in Surah Yusuf:

¡°I do not exculpate myself. Lo! The (human) soul enjoins unto evil, save that whereon my Lord has mercy. My Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.¡±
(12/53)

¡®Nafs Lawwamah¡¯ is between the two; sometimes, considering the virtue of ¡®higher status¡¯ tends to it while sometimes is attracted by glamour of the ¡®lower status¡¯ and tends to commit sins. This ¡®Nafs¡¯ is called ¡®Lawwamah¡¯ since it accuses its person of bad habits and feels ashamed. This ¡®Nafs¡¯ has been mentioned in Surah Al-Qiyamah:

¡°Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection;
Nay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true).
Thinks man that We shall not assemble his bones?¡±
(75/1-3)

The second thing, which urges a person to commit sins, is ¡®Satan¡¯. According to the Glorious Qur¡¯aan and Hadith ¡®Satan¡¯ is the chief evil spirit who was one of the most pious and nearest ones to Allah but once defied His commandment and became His ¡®enemy¡¯. Allah (SWT) has empowered him to deviate a person and granted him life to the end of the world. He and his small helpers have been regarded in the Qur¡¯aan and Hadith as the enemies who try every nerve to derail man from right path and help those who work to harm noble cause. The third thing that attracts a man to evil deeds is the bad atmosphere, which is created by human fellows. So, it is required to avoid bad company and a place where evil is done.

Dear Brother! As you referred in your question that you though pray regularly but still tend to disobedience of Allah, it is good at least to the extent that you feel the disobedience and try to overcome it. According to above mentioned kinds you fall in the third category which is in between. First of all, thank Allah for whatever he gives you ¡®Tawfeeq¡¯, and invoke His support and help for more devotion and depth in spirituality since it is only Allah who enabled you for these things, otherwise we have no power. Secondly, keep on performing prayers regularly and try to improve the quality, following every Sunnah and Adab with full attention and humility. Salah is such a prayer is performed in required fashion it stops a man to coomit sins as the Glorious Qur¡¯aan says: ¡°and establish worship. Lo! worship preservs from lewdness and iniquity,¡± (Surah Al-Ankabut 29, Verse 45). Besides, do not forget the other commandments of the Qur¡¯aan and Hadith regarding dealings, morals, social matters and so on. If you do not know learn them and do know their uses and harms. Moreover, the best thing recommended to be performed is Zikr, as much as you can. You can do Zikr every time and in every state. Zikr, as a Hadith says, polishes the heart and removes the stains of sins and disobedience away.

Herewith, you should keep in mind that only occuring bad desires in mind and fancying them is not a sin until man commits it or detremines to commit it or wants the thinking to continue.

(3) Music in Islam

This question contains three different sub-questions; first is music, second is singing while the third is music without vioces of singers behind. The first and the third have the same ruling. So, basically there rae only two questions i.e. music and songs.

Musci is Haram whether it is listened or played. Many Companions of the Prophet (SAWS) have said that it is meant in the verse of the Glorious Qur¡¯aan where it says:

¡°And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Qur'an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-Fire).¡± The Noble Qur'an - Luqman 31:6

Besides, there are many traditions of the Prophet (SAWS) which have very sternly prohibited Muslims to indulge in music. Here are some of them available at the time:

¡°Hazrat ibn Abbas (Raz) says that the Prophet (SAWS) said: Allah (SWT) has prohibited from wine, gambling and musical instruments, and he said, every intoxicant is Haram.¡± (Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 3685)

¡°Narrated By Abu Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: That he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. and there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih Bukhari, Vol 7, Book 69. Drinks. Hadith 494B)

¡°The Prophet said that Allah has sent him as mercy and guide for mankind and He commanded him to destroy all the musical instruments, idols, crosses and all the trappings of ignorance. Allah said that if a man took even a mouthful of wine, He would make him drink the same quantity of pus of the wounds of the people in Hell.¡± (Musnad Imam Ahmad, Vol. 5, Musnad Al-Ansar, Hadith Abu Umamah)

¡°Hazrat Ali (Raz.) reports that the Prophet (SAWS) said: when people start taking ¡®spoils of war¡¯ are unduly, occupying trust, considering Zakat as tax, seeking the knowledge of religion for the sake of the worldly gain, obeying wife other than mother, approaching friend and dintancing father, making noise in mosques, when the sinner ones rule people and the leader is the lowest one, when a man is honoured due to his mischief, when singer women and music is common, when wine is drunk and when the forthcoming people start cursing the passed ones then wait for red wind, earthquake, disface etc.¡± (Tirmizi, Hadith No. 2307)

Please, read repeatedly this Hadith and realize the present situation. The current situation of the world has reached to an edge of distruction and devastation. May Allah safeguard us all!

Singing and listening of songs without music is allowed, provided the songs are not provocating to sexual desire and not contradicting to the teachings of Islam in any case. Likewise, the singer should not be non-Mahram from opposite sex and as well as beautiful teenager who may be sexually attarctive.

Allah knows the best
